VisionQuest's two-episode premiere on Disney+ marks the return of Paul Bettany as Vision, struggling to reconcile his present identity with the memories of his past after the harrowing events of WandaVision. In addition to Vision living a dual life, a pub worker in Edinburgh by the day who retreats into his Mind Palace with his AI family by the night, the premiere introduced a new threat in the form of bounty hunter Paladin (played by Star Trek: Picard’s Todd Stashwick), hired by a mysterious Client to capture Vision.
Introduced as an ordinary bounty hunter in VisionQuest, Paladin quickly established himself as more than just another obstacle in Vision’s path. His calculated moves, tactical thinking, and ability to stay one step ahead make him a character worth paying attention to. Beyond the Disney+ series, Paladin first appeared as a character in Marvel comics, operating as a mercenary, private investigator, and gun-for-hire for whoever pays the most.
With Paladin tracking down Vision's son and openly challenging him, his methods suggest brute force is not the only weapon at his disposal.
Here's why Paladin's lore makes him a significant character in the miniseries.
VisionQuest's double-episode premiere introduced resourceful bounty hunter Paladin, who will likely become Vision's biggest problem in upcoming episodes. Fans unaware of Paladin's lore might mistake him for an ordinary bounty hunter, but he has appeared in Marvel comics for nearly five decades.
Created by Jim Shooter and Carmine Infantino, Paladin first debuted in Daredevil #150 in January 1978. While the character's real name is unknown, he operated under the alias of Paul Denning and is shown neither good nor bad in the comics. As shown in VisionQuest, Paladin operates under a strict moral code and works for whoever pays him the most. While the comics do not frame Paladin as a supervillain, his assignments often brought him face-to-face with street-level superheroes, including Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Punisher, and Wasp.
According to Nerdist, despite Paladin's rich lore, where he worked for the Heroes For Hire team, Thunderbolts, the Wild Pack and the Serpent Society, Disney+'s latest miniseries marks his live-action debut. Much like the series, Paladin's abilities were largely shrouded in mystery in the comics. His superhuman strength, stamina, speed, and ability in all martial arts made him stand apart from other hunters, but the origins of these mysterious powers remain a secret.
Like the comics, VisionQuest retained much of the mystery surrounding Paladin. After the attack in the pub killed Fiona, Paladin executed the responsible sniper, reiterating his strict rule of no civilians. Paladin seemed determined to capture his target, but he was unaware of the vibranium-encased synthezoid's powers, and Vision flew from his clutches. While Vision struggled to evade his newest enemy with his AI family, the bounty hunter was already on his next plan: using Vision's son as bait.
According to GamesRadar+, F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s research in VisionQuest Episode 2 revealed that Paladin was the last in a centuries-long line of hunters. The assassin mantle was passed down through generations, giving the character a historically rich lore. The AI also revealed that the bounty hunter is highly skilled in every art and weapon, never accepts defeat, and completes his assignment at all costs.
We get a glimpse into Paladin's determination in Episode 2, when he tracked down Vision's son, Tommy Maximoff, who was living in London in the body of a 20-year-old boy named Thomas. After Paladin's initial plan did not work, he used footage from Thomas' psych evaluation to confirm his identity as Vision's son. Next, he arrived in London, kidnapped Thomas, and used him as bait to lure Vision into the real world. Paladin's carefully laid-out plan proves he is not just a trained bounty hunter following orders but is also capable of strategizing when needed, positioning him as one of the biggest obstacles in Vision's path.
