Imrane Chelirem, 15, and his father Mohamed were named locally as the victims of the attack at the hands of two masked men in Station Road, Thurnby, Leicestershire, shortly before 00:30 BST on 8 October.

Imrane was a "teammate, a friend and a huge part of our football family," Coalville Town Raptors said in a social media post.

On Wednesday, Leicestershire Police said the man, in his 50s, and the boy were continuing to receive specialist treatment in hospital.

The force said their wife and mother – a woman in her 40s – suffered minor injuries, while three other children who were in the address were not injured.

Armed officers were deployed, but the men had left the house before they arrived.

The club set up a GoFundMe page, with "the blessing" of Imrane's immediate family, to support them.

In a statement on the page, Coalville Town Raptors said: "Imrane is a much-loved member of our football family.

"A young man full of life, personality and determination, who has built friendships and memories with his teammates that go far beyond football.

"As a club, a team and a community, we want to come together to show this family that they are not facing this difficult journey alone."

On Wednesday, the force added there was "nothing to suggest" that the attack was "racially or religiously motivated at this stage".

Officers added they would like to provide reassurance to the local community that they did not believe anyone, other than the two people who entered the house, were responsible.

Det Insp Lorna Granville said: "Our searches in the surrounding area are now complete and we are continuing to carry out further inquiries to locate those responsible.

"While I can't go into specific details, I'd like to reassure residents that the investigation is progressing significantly and specially trained officers are continuing to support the family involved.

"At this stage in the investigation, we have no information to suggest there is a wider risk to the public.

"I'd like to thank everyone who contacted us with information. I'd also like to acknowledge the work of colleagues from Leicestershire and across the region for their work during this investigation.

"If you can help, it's not too late to come forward with any information or footage that could assist us."
