Tanzania records good progress in carbon trading, with six projects generating carbon credits

KIGALI: TANZANIA has made progress in carbon trading, with six projects reaching the stage of generating carbon credits to promote green investment and environmental conservation, Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office (Union Affairs and Environment), Engineer Hamad Yussuf Masauni, has said.

Speaking today, October 14, 2026, at the opening of the Africa Carbon Markets Forum 2026 in Kigali, Masauni said the government had continued to strengthen policy and institutional frameworks to ensure transparency in carbon projects and deliver benefits to local communities.

He said amendments to the Environmental Management Act in 2025 had enabled the establishment of the National Carbon Monitoring Centre (NCMC), which will oversee project registration, measurement and verification of carbon trading outcomes.

Masauni called on African countries to strengthen cooperation among governments, investors and financial institutions to mobilise more capital and accelerate the implementation of projects that benefit both the environment and local communities.

Meanwhile, NCMC Chief Executive Officer Kathryn Kigaraba said the forum provided an opportunity to discuss ways to increase investment and build a credible carbon market.

The Director General of the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), Dr Immaculate Semesi, pledged continued cooperation with NCMC in overseeing carbon projects for the benefit of the public and the environment.
