“He slapped me when I said I was menstruating” – Obuasi SHTS student recounts assault by headmaster
According to a report by Ghanaweb on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, two female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School have recounted alleged sexual abuse by the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, in a preview of a video report released by JoyNews. The students say the incidents took place at the headmaster’s bungalow.
One of them alleges that when she told him she was menstruating, he refused to accept her word and forced a check on her. When she objected, she says, he slapped her and gripped her head, and she gave in only after the violence.
A second student describes a struggle in which the headmaster allegedly removed her clothing and assaulted her. She says he later dragged her into his bedroom, where the assault was repeated.
Following the allegations, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directed the headmaster to step aside while investigations are carried out. In a statement issued on Monday, October 12, 2026, the Ministry of Education also asked the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Ghana Police Service headquarters to investigate the claims.
The statement, signed by the Ministry’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, described the allegations as serious. It reminded the public that parents and guardians entrust their children to teachers, whose duty is to protect and safeguard them, not to abuse them. The Ministry added that it and the Ghana Education Service will not tolerate alleged misconduct of this nature in any educational institution.
The allegations have not been tested in court, and the full JoyNews video is yet to be published. The report did not carry a response from the headmaster.
