CS Opiyo Issues Strong Statement After Gachagua’s Remarks on Oil Prices
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has hit back at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his remarks on fuel prices, challenging him to address his concerns directly to the Energy Ministry.
Speaking during a public rally in West Pokot County, Wandayi defended the government’s handling of the petroleum sector and criticised Gachagua for dragging President William Ruto into the fuel pricing debate.
The CS maintained that the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) was responsible for determining fuel prices in accordance with the law. He also said Kenya continued receiving adequate fuel supplies despite disruptions in international markets.
Wandayi further accused Gachagua of previously extorting oil marketing companies while serving in government. However, the allegation was not independently substantiated.
The Energy CS also challenged the former Deputy President to confront him directly if he had concerns about the management of the energy sector, insisting that fuel and electricity matters fell under his ministry.
Earlier, Gachagua alleged that President Ruto had ordered an increase of KSh 12 per litre for petrol and KSh 9 for diesel to raise money for political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He also accused Wandayi of preparing to justify the alleged increases by citing rising international oil prices.
The exchange comes amid growing public concern over fuel costs, which affect transport, household expenses and businesses across Kenya. The competing claims have intensified debate over the government’s management of petroleum prices and accountability.
