Bad News for Kalonzo as His 2027 Presidential Ambitions Hit Another Roadblock Following This Report
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has stopped the Azimio la Umoja Coalition from adopting the name The Ukombozi Alliance, introducing a new legal challenge for opposition leaders as they prepare for the 2027 General Election.
In interim orders issued on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the tribunal directed the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to stop all steps towards formally registering the coalition under the proposed name.
The decision follows a dispute over the use of the name Ukombozi, with a petitioner claiming that he had already reserved the name Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP).
According to the petitioner, the existing reservation makes it inappropriate for the registrar to approve a similar name for the Azimio coalition. The Wiper Patriotic Front is also involved in the dispute.
The tribunal ordered the registrar not to approve, gazette, register or take further administrative steps towards formalising The Ukombozi Alliance until the matter is heard and determined.
The case has been certified as urgent, with October 29 set as the next mention date. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and the Wiper Patriotic Front have also been directed to file their responses within seven days.
The development comes weeks after Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced that Azimio la Umoja would adopt the name The Ukombozi Alliance. The proposed change was intended to accommodate other political parties seeking to work with the coalition.
However, the name has become the subject of competing claims involving political groups linked to the opposition, including those associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
The registrar had previously rejected a proposal to rename the United Democratic Party as Ukombozi People’s Party, citing similarities with The Ukombozi Alliance.
The latest orders do not amount to a final ruling on who has the right to use the disputed name. Instead, they temporarily halt the registration process as the tribunal considers the competing claims.
The outcome could affect Azimio’s rebranding plans as opposition leaders continue preparing their political strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
