Lisandro Martínez Makes Brutal Admission About Manchester United’s Squad

According to a report by Vanguard Newspapers on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Lisandro Martínez has questioned whether Manchester United have a squad capable of competing at the highest level of European football following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid.

Speaking to CBS, the Argentine defender admitted that the players must improve their performances but stressed that building a strong squad is equally important for competing in major European matches.

“This is NOT a Champions League quality squad,” Martínez said.

“I think us, the players, we can do more, but it’s also important to build a strong squad to be ready for these kinds of nights,” he added.

Martínez’s comments highlight the challenges facing Manchester United as they seek to establish themselves among Europe’s elite clubs. His remarks suggest that individual effort alone may not be enough to deliver success without sufficient quality and depth across the squad.

The defender also acknowledged the responsibility of the players, making it clear that they must raise their standards rather than place the blame entirely on the club’s squad-building decisions.

Manchester United’s defeat to Atlético Madrid has increased scrutiny of the team’s ability to compete against top European opposition. The result also raises questions about whether the current squad possesses the consistency, depth and quality required to challenge Europe’s leading clubs.

Martínez’s assessment is likely to attract attention from United supporters, particularly those who believe the club needs significant improvements in recruitment to return to the top of European football.

His comments underline the importance of addressing both individual performances and the overall strength of the squad if Manchester United are to compete successfully on the biggest stage.
