Liverpool Superstar Could Be Signed By Chelsea

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, former Germany captain Lothar Matthaus has urged Florian Wirtz to regain his top form at Liverpool, while suggesting that Chelsea could emerge as a potential destination for the midfielder because of his previous relationship with manager Xabi Alonso.

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last year for a British-record transfer fee of £116 million. However, the 23-year-old has struggled to live up to expectations at Anfield since his arrival. He made 49 appearances in his first season, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions.

The German international showed signs of improvement during the festive period, recording five goals and two assists in nine matches. Nevertheless, he has found it difficult to sustain that impressive run, prompting questions about whether Liverpool are making the most of his attacking qualities.

Matthaus believes Wirtz had greater freedom to express himself at Bayer Leverkusen and received the ball more frequently than he currently does at Liverpool. He suggested that the midfielder’s involvement has been limited because his teammates often prioritise other attacking options.

The former Germany captain also warned that continued criticism and a lack of enjoyment could eventually lead both Wirtz and Liverpool to reconsider their long-term plans.

According to Matthaus, a move to Bayern Munich would be difficult to arrange in the immediate future because of the club’s existing attacking options and contractual commitments. However, he identified Spain as another possible destination and mentioned Chelsea as an alternative, with Alonso now in charge of the London club.

Wirtz enjoyed considerable success under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, recording 38 goals and 43 assists in 119 appearances during their time together. Their previous working relationship could make a potential reunion an interesting prospect.

However, there has been no confirmation of a possible transfer to Chelsea, and Wirtz remains contracted to Liverpool for another three and a half years.
