Heavy Rains Expected Today, Check If You Will Be Affected
The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall across 18 counties as Kenyans continue to experience the October short rains season.
In a weather advisory released on Tuesday, October 13, the department said rainfall was expected from 9pm that evening until 9pm on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The forecast covers several parts of western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the central region, northeastern Kenya and the Coast, with residents in the listed counties advised to prepare for changing weather conditions.
According to the advisory, the 18 counties expected to receive rainfall are Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, West Pokot, Siaya, Kericho, Kisii, Nyamira, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Meru, Garissa, Wajir and Lamu.
Residents in these areas should remain alert, particularly when travelling or carrying out outdoor activities during periods of rainfall.
Nakuru is among the counties on the list, meaning residents should be prepared for possible rainfall during the forecast period. However, the advisory does not mean that every location within each county will necessarily receive rain.
Besides the rainfall forecast, the meteorological department warned of strong winds in parts of eight other counties.
The affected areas include Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Mombasa, Kilifi and Tana River, where southerly to southeasterly winds were expected to exceed 25 knots, equivalent to approximately 46 kilometres per hour.
The wind warning is particularly relevant to people involved in fishing, transport and outdoor trading, as well as those working in exposed areas.
Residents in affected regions are advised to exercise caution around loose objects and temporary structures during strong winds and to avoid crossing flooded roads or moving through fast-flowing water if heavy rainfall occurs.
The latest forecast comes amid the October short rains season, when weather conditions can change across different parts of the country.
Kenyans are encouraged to follow updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department for any changes to the forecast and further guidance on weather-related risks.
