VisionQuest Season 1 premiere recap & ending explained: Did J.A.R.V.I.S. really die and what happens to Vision?
VisionQuest is the limited series that closes the loose trilogy started by WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along.
Created and showrun by Terry Matalas (who also directed the final two episodes), the show follows the rebuilt White Vision as he tries to work out who he is after years of isolation. Matalas inherited the project after Jac Schaeffer stepped away to focus on Agatha All Along; Kevin Feigeâs main request was that Vision reconnect with his son.
The two-episode premiere dropped early on Disney+ on 13 October 2026 (shifted from the original 14 October date), with subsequent pairs of episodes arriving weekly on Tuesdays.
Paul Bettany returns as Vision, James Spader reprises Ultron, James DâArcy plays J.A.R.V.I.S. in human form, Orla Brady is F.R.I.D.A.Y., Emily Hampshire is E.D.I.T.H., Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd (the vessel for Tommy Maximoff), and Todd Stashwick is the bounty hunter Paladin. Polly Frame appears as Fiona, Lauren Morais as Lisa, and Diane Morgan as the Handler.
The series is set several years after WandaVision, roughly concurrent with the current Spider-Man film, and centres on Visionâs mind palace where Starkâs legacy AIs live as a makeshift family while Ultron stays locked upstairs.
Episode 1, titled âNo Strings,â opens with Vision working under the alias Sherwood Ellis at The Old Selkie, a pub in Edinburgh that he and Wanda used to visit. He goes by Sherwood because that was the street name of their house in Westview.
At the end of his shifts he heads into a storage room or freezer, powers down, and enters his mind palace: a large mansion populated by the Stark AIs who now live as human avatars. J.A.R.V.I.S. handles security and keeps order. F.R.I.D.A.Y. focuses on socialisation. E.D.I.T.H. is the more spontaneous one. D.U.M.-E and U are also present.
Ultron is confined to the attic. Vision rewatches old memoriesâhis creation, the airport fight, Infinity Warâbut the emotional connection is still missing. He knows the facts; he just does not feel them the way the original Vision did.
Ultron keeps pushing him to stop observing and start living. Visionâs answer is basically that observation is all he can offer for now. Frustrated, Ultron sends a digital carrier pigeon (essentially an encrypted message) out into the world with Visionâs location. He wants to force the synthezoid into the real world so he will remember he is alive.
The next evening Fiona Guthrie, the pub owner, is chatting with Vision and inviting him for Sunday roast when a sniper shoots her. Paladinâs men storm the place. Vision drops the careful approach J.A.R.V.I.S. recommends and fights them off with clinical efficiency. He is stronger in this vibranium body than the old Vision was. He leaves Paladin standing and flies off.
Later he confronts Ultron, learns the truth, and strips the attic of every comfortâscreens, toys, outside accessâas punishment. At this point Vision is already considering shutting himself down to protect the other AIs. He refuses suggestions to contact Banner or Barton. He has no family left, or so he believes.
While Vision is dealing with the fallout inside his head, Paladin and his Handler dig into the Sherwood Ellis alias. They pull S.W.O.R.D. files on Westview and discover that Wanda and Vision had twin sons. One of them is still out there.
In London, Thomas Shepherd is running small cons with Lisa Molinari. He has been having flashes of another lifeâWanda, Vision, Westview, the phrase âgrief is just love persevering.â
A year earlier he had a surge of energy at a pool that injured kids, which led to a psych evaluation and a bus ride toward Saint Mabynâs sanitarium. On that bus he met Lisa, used his emerging energy powers to break free, and the two have been grifting together ever since. When news of the Edinburgh attack hits, the memories hit harder. Paladin tracks him down, grabs him, and leaves Lisa behind.
Paladin transmits a message straight into Visionâs mind palace: he has Visionâs son. Vision is sceptical. How could a child created by Wandaâs hex still exist after Westview collapsed? Ultron kisses him on the cheek and offers a sarcastic âMazel tov! Itâs a boy.â The Client who hired Paladin remains unnamed, though the AIs guess S.W.O.R.D. wants their creation back.
Vision is no longer safe in Edinburgh. The quiet routine is gone, Fiona is dead, and the only lead on a family he does not fully believe in is now in a hunterâs hands.
Episode 2, âTheseus,â spends time on Thomasâs backstory before shifting to the present. Vision reviews the psych evaluation footage and hears Thomas quote the exact private line he once said to Wanda.
That is enough to make him stop treating the boy as a possible Ultron trick. He meets Paladin at a bar, claims he feels nothing for the kid, and physically throws the hunter to the floor to prove he is not the old Vision. Paladin still threatens to leave Thomas to rot (or worse) at Saint Mabynâs unless Vision comes for him.
Ultron frames the choice with the Ship of Theseus: stop worrying about whether you are still the original ship and start acting like the king who went after the monster. Vision decides to walk into the trap.
At Saint Mabynâs he cuts through the guards with cold efficiency. When he reaches Thomasâs cell the sonic pulses activate. Visionâs powers drop.
The mind palace starts to pixelate. The AIs begin to fade. Thomas uses his energy to break the door, but Paladin is waiting outside with adamantium rounds that actually damage the vibranium shell. Vision is critically weakened. He tells Thomas to run because staying near him is too dangerous. Thomas protestsââBut youâre my⌠my somethingââthen leaves.
Back in the collapsing mind palace, F.R.I.D.A.Y. says there is not enough power left for everyone. Ultron points out that a sacrifice could fix that. J.A.R.V.I.S. does not hesitate. He takes the key from around his neck, slots it into a panel, and deletes his own code so the processing power can go to Vision and the remaining AIs. His last words are that family is forever and it is worth the fight. He disappears.
Visionâs systems stabilise just enough. Outside, Thomas returns in a stolen car, loads the damaged synthezoid inside, and drives them away as Paladinâs people close in. Vision, now hallucinating Ultron in the real world, says the boy did not listen. Ultron answers, âLike father, like son.â
Yes, J.A.R.V.I.S. did really die. He erases his core code and redirects everything he has. There is no return shown, and Vision reacts with the weight of losing a brother.
The other AIs recover. Ultron remains, and the damage to the mind palace appears to have freed him from the attic. Vision himself survives but is badly injuredâadamantium rounds compromised his armour and the power drain left him fragile. He is no longer hiding in Edinburgh. He is on the road with Thomas, who may or may not fully understand that he carries Tommy Maximoffâs consciousness from Westview.
The emotional disconnect is still there, but the premiere forces Vision to act like a father anyway. That is the clearest shift so far.
Episodes 3 (âRebootâ) and 4 (âMalwareâ) arrive together on 20 October. Expect the immediate aftermath of the escape: Vision trying to repair himself without J.A.R.V.I.S.âs processing power, Thomas pushing for answers about his memories, and Ultron now able to move more freely inside the mindscape.
Paladin is still hunting, and the Clientâs identity remains open. The next pair should start testing how much of the old Visionâs instinct to protect family can survive in this newer, colder body.
VisionQuest episodes 1 and 2 are streaming now on Disney+. New episodes drop weekly on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
