Trump Promises $5,000 to Every Adult American if Republicans Win Congress

US President Donald Trump has promised to give $5,000 to every adult American citizen if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress, claiming that revenue generated through tariffs would fund the proposed payments.

Addressing a midterm election rally in Wasilla, Alaska, Trump said the proposed payout, which he called the ā€œTrump dividendā€, would be possible only under Republican control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

ā€œIf Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States $5,000,ā€ Trump said, arguing that his administration was collecting substantial revenue through tariffs.

He added that recipients would be required to spend the money within the United States.

However, Trump did not provide details about when the payments would be made, how they would be administered or how much the programme would cost. Any such payout would require congressional approval.

Seeking to sharpen the political contrast with Democrats, Trump warned that a Democratic victory would trigger a severe economic downturn.

ā€œIf the Democrats win, you will have a 1929 style economic depression,ā€ he said.

Trump was campaigning for Republican Senator Dan Sullivan ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. He also attacked Democratic candidate Mary Peltola, calling her ā€œno show Maryā€. Early voting is scheduled to begin on October 19.

The President also addressed the conflict involving Iran, predicting that it would end soon and promising that energy prices would fall afterwards.

ā€œIran will not have a nuclear weapon,ā€ Trump said, adding that the war ā€œis going to end very soon and when it does, your prices are going to come tumbling downā€.

He claimed the United States had increased the volume of oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz compared with the period before the war and asserted that Washington controlled the strategic waterway. He also threatened further action against Iran without providing details.

During the rally, Trump announced a full pardon for Mark Spurlock and signed pardons for two Anchorage diesel mechanics, Zachary Schubach and Patrick Fleming. The two mechanics had been convicted of Clean Air Act violations related to modifications to vehicle emissions-control systems.

ā€œThey want to put them in jail for ten years because they fixed an engine,ā€ Trump said.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, who also addressed the gathering, said the commission would vote during October on an additional $162 million investment to expand high-speed internet access in Alaska.

Trump also criticised Canada, accusing it of taking advantage of the United States for years, and claimed that Democrats had allowed 25 million people to enter the country illegally. He did not provide evidence for the figure.

The rally took place at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla. Trump’s two-day trip also includes stops in Nevada, Arizona and Montana.

Fuel prices have emerged as a key issue in the election campaign, with tensions in the Gulf continuing to affect global energy markets watched closely by major oil-importing countries, including India.
