Gauteng police have confirmed that one person is in custody after seven people, believed to be African National Congress (ANC) members, were shot on the East Rand.
Two people died and five others were wounded, including a 12-year-old, during a drive-by shooting in Katlehong on Tuesday night.
It’s alleged the victims were coming from a memorial service for a member of a political party when a man opened fire on them.
Officers said the suspect handed himself over to police.
“Seven people were shot. Two men, aged 23 and 21, were declared dead at the scene. Five other persons, aged between 12 and 27, sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment,” explained the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a statement.
“The case docket, with charges of murder and attempted murder, has been assigned to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) for further investigation.”
