His Performances Have Not Been Good Enough, But I Think He Is Right –Rooney Backs Martinez

According to a post by Fabrizio Romano on X on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has criticised Lisandro Martinez for publicly questioning the club’s investment and football leadership.

Rooney believes the Argentine defender’s comments could worsen Manchester United’s current situation rather than help resolve the club’s problems.

He also argued that Martinez should have handled his concerns privately instead of making them public.

The former England international also questioned whether the defender’s remarks would benefit the club at a difficult moment.

“He is disrespecting his teammates. It will not help the club’s situation at the minute,” Rooney said.

However, Rooney acknowledged that Martinez had raised a legitimate concern about Manchester United’s need for further investment, particularly in attacking positions and defence.

“His performances have not been good enough, but I think he is right in terms of the club needing to invest more at the top end of the pitch and the defense,” he said.

Despite agreeing with part of Martinez’s argument, Rooney questioned the manner in which the defender delivered his message.

He suggested that the public criticism could be interpreted as serving a personal agenda rather than helping the club move forward.

Rooney also maintained that Martinez had gone too far by expressing his concerns publicly, arguing that such discussions should have remained within the club.

“But I think it looks like it was a bit of an agenda. I think he may have gone a bit too far. It should have stayed internal,” Rooney added.

Rooney’s response highlights the disagreement over how Manchester United’s internal problems should be addressed, with the former captain accepting the need for investment while challenging Martinez’s decision to air his concerns publicly.
