Trump announces deal with Taiwan to spend billions on Alaskan gas pipeline
By WILKO MARTĂŤNEZ-CACHERO, US REPORTER 04:51 14 Oct 2026, updated 05:05 14 Oct 2026
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Taiwan had agreed to buy 30 percent of the gas from an Alaska pipeline project.
Trump said the agreement was ‘for the next 20 years’ and that it was ‘one of the biggest commitments in history for anything.’
The President was speaking at a campaign rally in Wasilla, Alaska, when he revealed the deal concerning the Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.
Trump added that Taiwan would also be investing $4.4 billion into the pipeline.
The roughly 800-mile-long pipeline would export up to 20 million metric tons of the LNG a year.
Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai said that the government’s job was to ‘stabilize the entire energy supply and build its resilience, like governments everywhere,’ according to Reuters.
However, Taiwan’s economic ministry, which is in charge of the country’s energy policy, had no immediate comment.
Trump also said that South Korea had committed to investing $50 billion into the pipeline. The project is expected to cost between $44.5 billion and $54.5 billion.
He suggested the deal he was referring to guaranteed the success of the pipeline.
Trump called the Alaska pipeline a ‘historic federal project’ as he also credited Sen. Dan Sullivan, a Republican, for working on the project ‘for years.’
‘He finally had the President to get it done,’ Trump added.
Trump said at the rally that ‘all’ necessary federal permits had been granted for the pipeline.
In February, Taiwan said that it would increase its purchases of US natural gas to make up about a third of the island’s imported supply last year.
CPC Corp, a Taiwan state energy firm, signed a deal with Alaska Gasline Development Corp last year to buy LNG and invest in the pipeline project.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said at the time that the investment would ensure the island’s energy security.
Pan Men-an, Taiwan’s Presidential Office Secretary-General, also visited the site of the proposed project in Alaska in June 2025.
The pipeline would effectively allow for US-made LNG to reach Asian markets, including Taiwan, without going through the Panama Canal or around the Horn of Africa.
State legislators have criticized the costs behind the pipeline, according to Alaska Public Media.
The developer, Glenfarne, said the first phase of the project, which is the pipeline itself, would likely cost between $13.2 and $16.9 billion.
In total, the full project is priced from $44.5 billion to $54.5 billion, the developer added.
The project is 75%-owned by Glenfarne Group, with the state of Alaska holding the rest through the state-owned Alaska Gasline Development Corporation.
South Korea has since said that ‘no decision has been made on whether to invest or on the size of the investment,’ Reuters reported.
‘If they don’t want to do it, that’s okay with me,’ Trump told reporters on October 2. ‘I’ll just charge them more.’
