We Did Not Seek Presidential Pardon For Wontumi – Atta Akyea
According to a report by Citi FM today being Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Private legal practitioner Samuel Atta Akyea has denied claims that he is seeking a presidential pardon for his client, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in connection with a galamsey-related case.
The lawyer’s denial comes amid discussions surrounding the legal challenges facing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, who has been linked to a case involving alleged illegal mining activities.
Atta Akyea, who is representing Chairman Wontumi in the matter, has dismissed suggestions that he has approached President John Dramani Mahama or any relevant authority to secure a pardon for his client.
A presidential pardon is generally an executive decision that may grant clemency to a person under certain circumstances. However, the circumstances under which such a decision may be considered depend on the applicable constitutional and legal provisions.
The lawyer’s position suggests that his client’s defence is not centred on obtaining executive clemency but on addressing the legal issues associated with the case through the appropriate judicial process.
Chairman Wontumi, a prominent political figure within the NPP, has attracted public attention over the galamsey-related proceedings. The matter has also generated discussions about accountability, the enforcement of laws against illegal mining, and the responsibilities of individuals and companies operating within Ghana’s mining sector.
Illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey in Ghana, remains a major national concern because of its reported effects on water bodies, forest reserves, agricultural lands, and the environment.
The government’s efforts to tackle illegal mining have continued to attract public interest, with political figures, civil society groups, and other stakeholders expressing different views on enforcement and accountability.
Atta Akyea’s denial clarifies his position regarding the reported presidential pardon, although the legal proceedings involving his client remain a separate matter.
Further developments in the case are expected to depend on the relevant legal processes and any official statements from the parties involved.
