Man indicted last month for 2025 homicide now in custody

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A man indicted last month by a Mahoning County grand jury for a 2025 shooting death is now in the Mahoning County jail.

Anthony McDaniel, 35, is being booked into the Mahoning County jail Tuesday on charges of murder, a first-degree felony, and arson, a fourth-degree felony.

It is not clear when McDaniel will be arraigned in common pleas court. He is accused of the shooting death of George Westhead, 63.

Westhead was found Oct. 9 underneath a bush in the front of a vacant home in the 600 block of Almyra Avenue. An Oct. 9 police report said that Westhead’s body was found by people cleaning up a property at a ā€œred-taggedā€ house on Almyra Avenue.

Another report from Oct. 7, 2025, said officers found an empty SUV that Westhead had been driving on fire about 2:45 a.m. at Bellview and East Marion avenues. The vehicle belonged to a family member, the report said.

That report said Westhead was last seen about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 6 when he went to visit his girlfriend. He then went to a family member’s home on Salt Springs Road and left there about 1 a.m. Oct. 7, reports said.
