Nkgetheng Letsoalo from Mamatsha Village in Ga-Molepo, outside Mankweng, drowned on Monday, 12 October, after going fishing at a local dam with a friend.

Family spokesman Phutiane Letsoalo (59) said fishing and swimming had been part of Mkhulu’s life since he was young.

He said the family was struggling to accept that their beloved Mkhulu was gone.

“Fishing and swimming were his passion. He taught all of us, including our children, how to swim,” he said.

But as mkhulu grew older, his family became increasingly worried about his safety.

Phutiane said they often pleaded with him to stop going to the dam because they feared he could drown.

“He was already old, and we kept telling him to stop going to the dam because he couldn’t swim like he used to,” he said.

Phutiane described mkhulu as a loving and caring old man who meant a lot to his family.

The family is still waiting for the forensic report before finalising his burial arrangements.

“Maybe we can lay him to rest on Sunday,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that Mankweng cops have opened an inquest docket following the drowning.

He said police were called to Molepo Dam near Mamatsha village during the day on Monday.

“According to the report, a pensioner who was net-fishing in the dam with his friend allegedly drowned,” he said.

The old man’s body was recovered by SAPS Water Wing divers, assisted by emergency medical services.

Police said investigations were continuing.
