TWO suspects have been arrested following a high-speed chase through the Deep South after a gang fight on Friday spilled into an innocent family’s Cafda yard, leaving a mother whose baby was just two weeks old and a man on his way to buy sugar dead.

The arrests are a breakthrough in the double murder in Ensor Street, where gunmen allegedly chasing a suspected gangster opened fire after he ran into someone’s yard to escape them.

Eva Lakay, 45, leaves behind three children, including her two-week-old baby girl, while Nazeer Williams, 31, was reportedly on his way to buy sugar when he was gunned down. The alleged target escaped unharmed.

Metro Police acted swiftly, tracking down the suspects on the same day as the shooting. Officers were alerted at 9.25am and given a description of a white Chevrolet linked to the double murder, which was later spotted travelling along Military Road.

GUNS SEIZED: Two firearms and 11 live rounds of ammunition were recovered

According to the City of Cape Town, officers pursued the vehicle through Capricorn before it stopped in Seawinds.

“Three occupants attempted to evade arrest, but officers apprehended two of the suspects,” the City said.

A search of the vehicle uncovered two firearms and 11 live rounds of ammunition in a magazine. The vehicle had allegedly been hijacked in Cafda after the shooting.

The two suspects were arrested on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving. They were detained at Steenberg SAPS.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith said the arrests formed part of 474 arrests made by the City’s enforcement services during the past week.

“The officers’ swift response resulted in the arrest of two murder suspects who at that time were also putting the lives of others on the road at risk.

“Whether it is taking criminals or illegal weapons out of circulation, our officers will continue to make our streets safer.

During the past week, Metro Police arrested 120 suspects, recovered nine hijacked or stolen vehicles and six prohibited firearms, and issued 6 856 fines. Law Enforcement officers made 297 arrests and issued 13 263 notices.
