The country has a history of dangerous train incidents, according to reports

At least five people are dead, and dozens were injured after a passenger train derailed in northeastern Pakistan.

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, around 5:30 a.m. local time, a train was en route from the city of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the north, when the tragedy occurred, the Associated Press (AP) and Pakistani outlet Geo News reported. The 14-car train had reached Sher Shah in Punjab province when it derailed, killing at least five people, according to the outlets.

When emergency responders arrived, rescuers retrieved four bodies and evacuated 35 injured passengers, Kaleem Akhtar, a spokesperson for Pakistan Railways, told the AP. One of the passengers died before the injured were transported to a local hospital.

Pakistan Railways, a state-owned railway operator, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Video shared by the outlet shows the train cars at a stop and zigzagging across the tracks, as people head towards waiting vehicles with their possessions.

“So investigations on this are ongoing,” the spokesperson told the AP. “Until the investigation comes to an end, we cannot determine the true cause of this incident.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shared his condolences for the passengers involved and urged authorities to provide care to the injured as quickly as possible, Geo News reported.

The deadly derailment is part of a systemic pattern in Pakistan. In 2023, a passenger train went off the tracks in the southern part of the country, killing 30 people and injuring more than 90 others, the AP reported.
