Massive Reactions As Alleged NDC Membership Card Of Emelia Affi, New EC Deputy Chair Surfaces Online

An image purporting to be the National Democratic Congress (NDC) membership identity card of Emelia Affi Agbenyo has stirred heated debate on social media, following her appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The card, which was shared on October 13, 2026, by New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Kofi Ofosu Nkansah on his verified Facebook page, shows her name, an ID number, and her details as Volta Region, Keta Constituency, Kedzi Branch. Accompanying the image, Mr. Nkansah suggested that President John Mahama had, for the first time, appointed a card-bearing member of a political party to a top position at the EC.

The post has since attracted a wave of responses from Ghanaians, with opinions sharply divided along political lines.

Supporters of the appointment argue that the balance at the Electoral Commission remains fair, pointing out that the substantive chairperson is perceived to have ties to the NPP, while the deputies are said to have links to the NDC. In their view, such a mix guarantees checks and balances within the institution. Some also maintain that the President did not breach any law in making the appointments, citing the position of a known commentator on the matter.

Critics, on the other hand, believe the development sets a worrying precedent for an institution that is expected to be neutral and independent. Others used the opportunity to urge the opposition NPP to learn from history, a reference to past appointments made under previous administrations. A number of commenters also took a lighter approach, with several teasing those who questioned the appointment, while others praised the President as a “history maker.”

The debate highlights the continuing sensitivity around appointments to Ghana’s electoral body, whose credibility is seen as crucial to the country’s democracy. As discussions continue online, many are waiting to see whether the Presidency or the Electoral Commission will respond to the claims.
