Sports Governance: Why President Mahama Suspended NSA Boss Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

President John Dramani Mahama suspended the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, following administrative disclosures and ongoing scrutiny regarding an alleged visa facilitation arrangement for international sports events. According to official government disclosures reported by GhanaWeb and MyJoyOnline on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the suspension was instituted to allow formal investigative proceedings to be conducted without administrative interference.

The decision was communicated through the Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, who informed the embattled sports administrator of the executive directive to temporarily step aside while an independent panel examines operational practices surrounding international travel permits and visa processing within the authority. Following his suspension, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong was appointed to serve as the acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority.

Addressing the executive directive, Ampofo Ankrah confirmed receiving communication from the sector ministry regarding the probe, stating that while he was disappointed by the timing and lack of an initial hearing, he remains calm and fully cooperative with investigative authorities. His legal counsel advised against commenting on specific details of the inquiry to prevent prejudicing the findings of the oversight committee.

The executive action forms part of broader administrative reforms within Ghana’s sports governance architecture, coming shortly after the dissolution of the NSA governing board. Civil society organizations and sports analysts have welcomed the formal investigation, emphasizing that transparency in national sports administration is crucial for maintaining public trust and safeguarding institutional credibility.
