Edo: Ighodalo Came to My House More Than 3 Times, I Told Him, You Have to Fail, and He Failed – Wike

According to a report by Vanguard on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said he rejected the possibility of Asue Ighodalo becoming the next governor of Edo State, despite describing him as a good candidate.

Wike explained that Ighodalo visited his house more than three times during the period leading up to the Edo governorship election. However, he told him that he would not support his ambition because he did not want former Governor Godwin Obaseki to produce his successor.

The minister said he made it clear to Ighodalo that although he considered him a good candidate, he could not support him in that particular election because of his connection with Obaseki, whom he described as ungrateful.

According to Wike, he believed that electing Ighodalo would amount to allowing Obaseki to return to power through his preferred successor. He therefore insisted that Ighodalo had to lose the election.

Wike admitted that he played a role in the political arrangement that brought together members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to defeat the PDP candidate.

He said the coalition was responsible for the victory of Monday Okpebholo, who defeated Ighodalo in the 2024 Edo governorship election.

In his words, “He came to my house more than three times. I said, ‘Listen, you’re a good candidate, but for this election, I’m sorry, because this election is between us and the man who is bringing you, called Obaseki, an ungrateful person, so returning you is like bringing him back, so I’m sorry. You have to fail,’ and he failed.”
