Ademola Lookman ‘Isn’t at his best level’ – Simeone gives honest verdict ahead of Man United clash
According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday October 13, 2026, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has admitted that Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is struggling to reach his best level but has expressed confidence in the Nigerian ahead of their Champions League clash with Manchester United.
Lookman joined Atletico from Atalanta in January for around €35 million and enjoyed an impressive start to life in Spain, recording nine goals and four assists in 24 appearances.
However, the 28-year-old has struggled to maintain that form this season, scoring just once in nine appearances across all competitions. His recent performances have also affected his position in the team, with Alex Baena receiving more opportunities in the starting line-up.
Speaking ahead of Atletico’s meeting with Manchester United, Simeone acknowledged Lookman’s difficulties but praised his commitment in training and insisted that he still believes in the forward’s abilities.
“Ademola isn’t at the level he wants or we want, but he works hard every day. He’s a dribbler, and he needs to lose the ball sometimes. I believe in him,” Simeone said.
The Argentine’s comments suggest that Lookman must continue trusting his dribbling ability and be willing to take risks, even when his attempts do not always succeed. Simeone believes the Nigerian possesses the qualities needed to turn his situation around.
Lookman’s struggles were evident in Atletico’s recent 2-1 victory over Alaves, where he was substituted before the second half was fully underway for tactical reasons.
The forward will now hope to respond to his manager’s backing when Atletico face Manchester United in the Champions League. His experience playing in England could prove useful, although it remains uncertain whether he will earn a starting spot.
