US-based Ghanaian sentenced over  $53,000 in workers’ compensation fraud

A 50-year-old US-based Ghanaian, Betty Boateng, has been sentenced for workers’ compensation fraud after she was caught collecting disability payments while secretly holding down two jobs.

Betty Boateng pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree felony. State investigators found she received workers’ compensation disability benefits while working as an in-home caregiver for two companies.

She reportedly received improper payments totalling $53,278.

Investigators say Boateng received $53,278.40 in benefits she was not entitled to. Disability benefits are meant to support workers who cannot work because of a workplace injury or illness. Collecting them while earning wages elsewhere, without reporting it, is fraud under Ohio law.

Though Boateng avoided time behind bars, the court handed her a 12-month suspended prison sentence, which she will serve only if she breaks the terms of her release, five years of community control, Ohio’s form of probation and an order to repay the full $53,278.40 in restitution, plus court costs
