Man Dies after Attempting to Rescue Wife and Children from their Flooded Residence in Kpomete
Residents of Kpometey in the Central Region are mourning the death of a man who reportedly lost his life after being trapped by floodwaters while trying to recover belongings from his home.
The tragedy followed heavy rains that caused widespread flooding in the Awutu Senya East Municipality. According to a Citi FM report dated July 1, 2026, the floods affected several houses in the community.
The victim had reportedly succeeded in moving his wife and children out of the flooded house before making the decision to go back for some valuables. He entered the building with the intention of taking items kept in a wardrobe.
While inside, however, the flood situation reportedly worsened. The rising water eventually trapped him inside the house, leaving him unable to escape.
Assemblyman Mustapha Mohammed said the man was unable to find his way out as the water level increased. Although residents and rescue efforts were mobilised, the rescuers could not get to him quickly enough to save his life.
The incident has reportedly left the community devastated, with relatives, friends and neighbours mourning the loss.
The man was subsequently buried in line with Islamic customs. Funeral prayers were held before his burial, with members of the community joining his family to pay their respects.
The incident has added to concerns about the growing impact of heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of Ghana. In some affected areas, families have been forced from their homes, while houses and other properties have suffered damage.
The tragedy has also served as a warning about the risks of returning to flooded homes for possessions. Emergency officials have repeatedly advised residents to put their lives first because floodwaters can increase rapidly and make buildings extremely dangerous.
Residents in areas vulnerable to flooding have been urged to stay informed, heed evacuation orders and follow emergency safety instructions whenever severe weather threatens their communities.
