Published on October 6, 2026, the 235-page book presents a distinctive South Asian perspective on one of the twenty-first centuryās most consequential geopolitical conflicts. It challenges dominant Western narratives and examines the strategic rivalries, diplomatic failures and shifting global power dynamics surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war.
The bookās international publication represents a significant milestone for independent Pakistani geopolitical commentary, providing a global platform for perspectives that are often underrepresented in mainstream Western discussions of international security, diplomacy and the emerging world order.
Featuring a preface by Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Muhammad Asad Durrani, former Director General of Pakistanās Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI), the book critically examines the historical origins, strategic calculations, military developments and far-reaching consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Rather than approaching the war exclusively through battlefield developments or prevailing political narratives, Ahmed explores the competing interests of major powers, the deterioration of European security arrangements, the confrontation between Moscow and Washington, and the diplomatic failures that preceded and prolonged the conflict.
The author examines NATOās eastward expansion, Russiaās stated security concerns, Ukraineās sovereignty and strategic choices, and the wider geopolitical contest involving the United States, European powers and China. Particular attention is devoted to the role of international institutions, economic sanctions, information warfare and the growing polarisation of global politics.
The book also investigates the conflictās devastating humanitarian and economic consequences, including civilian casualties, displacement, infrastructure destruction, environmental degradation, energy insecurity, disrupted food supplies and inflationary pressures affecting developing countries.
A central argument of the book concerns the international repercussions of the prolonged confrontation, particularly its implications for the changing balance of power, Russia-China strategic cooperation, Western economic influence and the future of multilateral diplomacy.
āThe Ukraine war cannot be understood merely through daily battlefield reports, competing narratives or dominant Western statements and statistics. Its roots, consequences and possible resolution demand a broader historical and geopolitical understanding. There is another side to what is persistently being projected in the Western media,ā Ahmed said, explaining the motivation behind the book.
He maintained that the conflict has exposed deep divisions in the international system while raising fundamental questions about sovereignty, collective security, military alliances, economic coercion and the effectiveness of global institutions.
āCountries outside the principal military alliances, particularly those in the Global South, have experienced serious economic consequences without having any meaningful influence over the decisions driving the confrontation. Their perspectives deserve greater attention in international discourse,ā he added.
The book examines diplomatic initiatives, interrupted negotiations and missed opportunities for a political settlement, questioning whether the international community has adequately prioritised diplomacy over military escalation.
Ahmed has been writing about Russia-Ukraine relations since well before February 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraineāa development described by Moscow as a āspecial military operation.ā Drawing on historical developments, official statements, diplomatic exchanges, international reporting and competing strategic assessments, Ahmed constructs a narrative that examines the conflict beyond its immediate military dimensions.
Preface by Former ISI Chief Asad Durrani A notable feature of the publication is the preface by Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Muhammad Asad Durrani, a prominent Pakistani intelligence and security figure whose professional experience encompasses military intelligence, international diplomacy and strategic affairs.

He also co-authored The Spy Chronicles: RAW, ISI and the Illusion of Peace with A. S. Dulat and Aditya Sinha.
