When I Was Building My Hotel, I Borrowed Money As I Was Getting Money, I Was Paying Back -Opara

Dr. Maxwell Opara, a lawyer and public affairs analyst, has said that borrowed money should be used for productive investments rather than holidays and birthday celebrations.

In an interview with SYMFONI TV on Monday October 12, 2026, Opara explained that borrowing money could help individuals and governments achieve their goals if the funds were invested in projects capable of generating income.

Opara said he borrowed money while building his hotel, explaining that he used the funds to purchase a KVA generator, a transformer and furniture for the facility. He added that he repaid the loans as money came in from his investments.

He argued that borrowing should be tied to a clear purpose and a plan for repayment. He said people should avoid taking loans to fund holidays or birthday parties for their wives, stressing that borrowed money should be directed towards investments.

In Opara’s words: “Do you know how much Nigeria has borrowed? People borrow. When I was building my hotel, I borrowed money. I invested in that hotel because I wanted it to grow. I borrowed money to buy a KVA generator, purchase a transformer and furnish the hotel. As I was getting money, I was paying back. The point I’m making is that you don’t borrow money to go on holiday or celebrate a birthday party for your wife. You borrow money to invest.”
