Religious Send -Off? Bodyguard Reveals Why Doctors Used Electric Shock On Raila In His Last Minutes
The final moments of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India have come into sharper focus after his long-time bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, recounted what happened when the veteran politician suddenly collapsed during a morning walk.
In an emotional account shared during an interview with KTN News, Ogeta explained why doctors used electrical shocks while trying to save Raila’s life at a hospital in Kerala, India.
His account offers a glimpse into the frightening moments that unfolded before the former prime minister was pronounced dead on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80.
Ogeta recalled that he and Raila had gone out for their usual morning exercise around the facility where the politician was receiving treatment.
The route was approximately 50 metres long, and Raila intended to complete five rounds.
According to Ogeta, everything appeared normal during the first round. However, things took a worrying turn halfway through the second lap when Raila suddenly stopped and made a faint sound.
Walking about a metre away, Ogeta asked whether his boss was experiencing pain in his back or legs.
Raila did not answer. His eyes appeared distant, and he soon lost his balance, falling against the bodyguard.
An ambulance was called, and Raila was taken to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam for emergency treatment.
Ogeta said he watched medical staff press firmly on Raila’s chest as they attempted to revive him.
The procedure was cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), an emergency technique used to maintain blood circulation when the heart stops pumping effectively.
The force used during the procedure frightened Ogeta, who worried that the doctors might break Raila’s ribs.
He raised the concern with Dr Lumi, who explained that rib injuries can occur during CPR because firm chest compressions are necessary.
His anxiety increased when the medical team prepared equipment to deliver electrical shocks in an attempt to restore Raila’s normal heart rhythm.
Ogeta also noticed a Bible, a candle and a piece of cloth being placed nearby. The sight left him deeply worried about Raila’s chances of survival.
According to his account, Raila arrived at the hospital without a detectable pulse or blood pressure after suffering cardiac arrest.
Despite the medical team’s efforts, he could not be saved.
The loss was particularly painful for Ogeta, who had worked closely with Raila for years.
He later broke down when the former prime minister’s body arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
For him, Raila was not simply an employer but also a mentor, a close friend and a father figure.
Ogeta’s recollection has offered Kenyans a personal account of the final moments of a leader whose political career shaped the country’s history for decades.
