EC Appointments: Mahama won’t leave any useful legacy—Atik Mohammed
Political activist Atik Mohammed has condemned the John Dramani Mahama-led government for appointing a partisan person as the Deputy Electoral Commission Chairperson.
He argues that filling the Electoral Commission with party activists endangers the commission’s neutrality and impartiality.
To him, the president clearly does not want to leave any useful legacy after his second term considering the fact that he repeats in terrible fashion the ills of the former president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Making this point known in a social media post he said, “The appointment of Emelia is wrong for the simple reason that she’s clearly partisan. Populating the commission with active party activists endangers the neutrality and impartiality of the commission. Much as I condemn this choice, I cannot pretend not to know the origin of this trend.
When we criticized the partisan choice of Akuffo Addo into the commission, operatives and spokespersons of the government rationalized it with all the vehemence at their command. Principles endure, but convenience is fleeting. That’s why it’s always good to legislate with opposition in mind. Having said that, President Mahama has demonstrated by this appointment that he has no desire to leave a useful legacy. He repeats in a much worse fashion, the terrible actions of Akuffo Addo. This appointment is one of those unfortunate decisions”.
On Monday, 12th October 2026, President John Dramani Mahama swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the EC.
