The CM inspected the gates being prepared for the Sukkur Barrage, noting that the barrage is crucial to the region as it serves as the “economic jugular vein” of Sindh.
Substantial improvements in water flow have been achieved 90 years after the formal restoration of the Sukkur Barrage, he said. Murad Ali Shah added that, in terms of its command area, the Sukkur Barrage is among the major barrages in the world.
It is pertinent to mention that new, large gates are being manufactured in China for the restoration and modernization of the Sukkur Barrage.
The Sindh CM was briefed on the construction of the gates and the overall progress of the project.
The briefing revealed that each Sukkur Barrage gate weighs more than 50 tons and will be transferred to Pakistan upon completion. Implementation of the Sukkur Barrage improvement project is now in its fourth consecutive year.
The briefing further noted that 44 out of 54 gates and their opening systems have been replaced and activated, and civil repair work on the 44 river gates has been completed. The remaining 10 gates have also been fabricated and will soon be shipped to Sukkur.
Chief Minister Sindh stated that the Sukkur Barrage restoration project was initiated on February 24, 2023, with a target completion date of June 30, 2027.
The modernization and rehabilitation contract was awarded jointly to CRBC and HBSZ, and forms part of broader efforts to rehabilitate both the Sukkur and Guddu barrages.
He noted that the Sukkur Barrage project is being executed with financial assistance from the World Bank, the Government of Pakistan, and the Government of Sindh. Implementation of the improvement project is divided into five parts, with Part 1 focusing specifically on the rehabilitation of the Sukkur and Guddu barrages.
