World Arthritis Day: Women found to be more prone to arthritis

Islamabad  – World Arthritis Day, observed annually on October 12 since 1996, raises awareness about arthritis, a condition that causes joint pain, stiffness and inflammation. Osteoarthritis (OA), caused by cartilage degeneration, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disorder, are among its most common forms.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 73% of people with osteoarthritis are over 55, while 60% are women. Nearly 70% of those affected by rheumatoid arthritis are also women.

Women have a higher risk to hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy-related changes, immune system differences, menopause and genetic and structural factors so they are considered more prone to arthritis.
