RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Richmond Police are investigating a deadly shooting near VCU’s campus.

An alert was sent out by VCU around 4:27 p.m. about a shooting near the 1000 block of Kinney Street.

Victoria Galdamez, who lives nearby, told 12 On Your Side she heard the shooting happen.

“I was actually clearing out something out in my shed and as soon as I stepped outside I heard about five gunshots. And it sounded pretty close, but this is a pretty quiet neighborhood, so I didn’t believe it was that close,” Galdamez said.

Officers on scene told us that when they arrived, they found an adult male on the street, unresponsive.

The 1000th block of Kinney Street and parts of West Leigh Street were blocked off for hours.

There was a large presence at the scene as officers, including RPD’s SWAT team, investigated.

Police believed there may have been an active threat in one of the homes just feet away.

Video captured by 12 On Your Side shows RPD’s SWAT team in an armored vehicle pull up to a home around 6:15 p.m.

Police did eventually bust down the door and send a drone, then officers inside, but after checking it out, RPD confirmed with us there was no one in the home except a dog.

All of it shocked neighbors, who watched on for hours

“I’ve been here since 1980, and I’ve never seen anything like this. I live right up the street. And I’ve never seen anything like this, so this is a first,” Wanda Helm said.

“We are a bit rattled, I think, but I was pretty reassured that the police came in 3-5 minutes, so if anything were to happen, I feel safe in knowing that they were here with us,” Galdamez said.

Henrico and VCU Police were also at the scene.

By around 8 p.m., police began clearing the scene and West Leigh Street was reopened.

RPD has not confirmed if a suspect has been arrested yet.
