With both festivals falling within a few weeks of each other, you don’t need to start decorating from scratch for each occasion. A few thoughtful changes can help you refresh your space without overspending or creating unnecessary clutter.

Start with elements that work for both Navratri and Diwali. Warm neutrals, rich wooden finishes and colours such as maroon, emerald green and mustard can complement the mood of both celebrations.

Keep larger items, including curtains, rugs and cushion covers, relatively neutral or versatile. This way, you won’t have to replace them when Diwali arrives. You can simply introduce festive colours, textures and accessories to give your home a different look.

Navratri décor often features colourful fabrics, mirror work, torans, flower garlands and a beautifully decorated puja area. Instead of putting everything away after the festival, retain reusable elements such as brass ornaments, decorative urli bowls and selected floral arrangements.

For Diwali, swap some of the brighter fabrics for metallic-edged cushions, silk table runners and embroidered throws. Copper accents and metallic finishes can also add a festive touch without requiring a complete makeover.

Lighting is one of the easiest ways to transition your home between festivals. During Navratri, you can focus on diyas and fairy lights around the puja area.

For Diwali, extend the lighting to your entrance, balcony and living room with lanterns, candles and LED lights. Rather than buying new lights for every occasion, choose pieces that can be reused and rearranged across different spaces.

With guests visiting during the festive season, your home should be comfortable as well as well-decorated. Declutter your living room, polish wooden furniture and rearrange seating to make conversations easier.

You can introduce a carved bench or a statement accent piece if your space allows. However, avoid overcrowding the room with furniture that serves little purpose beyond decoration.

Raghunandan Saraf shares his advice, “The best decoration for any festival occurs by creating a layering effect at home. Invest in items that will be around forever, like brass ornaments, fine fabric, lighting, and then switch only some small items each time depending on the festival. It ensures that you don’t overspend and don’t waste things while keeping your house coordinated. Pay attention to your main entrance and prayer hall since it sets the mood for all the guests. It should be functional and not extravagant.”
