Cape Coral woman says bullet tore through lanai while she watched Sunday football

A Cape Coral woman says she was watching football Sunday afternoon at her home on Southeast 13th Terrace when she heard a gunshot.

"I grew up with guns; I was born and raised in West Virginia, and as I said, that's a gunshot," said Deb Kowalkoski.

Kowalkoski said she found the bullet in her back lanai and immediately called 911.

"I picked it up, and it was a piece of lead, heavy like lead, and I said, 'That's a bullet. I swear it is,'" she said.

After the shot was fired, Kowalkoski said she made eye contact with a person, possibly the shooter.

"As soon as they saw me, they kind of took off," she said.

Cape Coral police responded to the scene; a neighbor shared video showing the police presence in front of Kowalkoski's home.

"We just saw the forensic person towards the back of the vehicle. They had just taken pictures, and I guess they were looking at their camera," said Linda Branscum, a Cape Coral resident.

Another neighbor, Julianne Kloake, said, "My son was very interested in it, and we noticed that they were about maybe five or six houses down, kind of hovered around together."

Kowalkoski said investigators took the bullet on Sunday after spending hours at her home.

"No one was hurt, but [I'm] little scared," she said.

Kowalkoski said she plans to press charges. Cape Coral police have not yet responded to requests for comment on the incident.
