NPP’s Miracles Aboagye Drops Bombshell Over Mahama’s Appointment of Emelia Agbenyo to EC
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has criticised the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), raising concerns about the political neutrality of the institution’s leadership.
In a series of posts on Facebook, Aboagye accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of establishing a questionable precedent by appointing an individual he alleges has strong ties to the party’s political activities to a senior position at the independent electoral body.
He argued that placing someone he considers an active partisan political operative in such a role could raise doubts about the Commission’s ability to maintain impartiality in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
The NPP communications director further warned that the appointment could undermine Ghana’s democratic reputation, accusing the governing party of putting the country’s democratic progress at risk.
Aboagye also questioned whether the NDC could not identify other qualified candidates for the position whose political affiliations would be less likely to generate controversy.
“This has never happened before in the history of our dear country’s democracy, that an open partisan political operative, who was and is a campaign team member of a political party, has been appointed to come and be a deputy chair to the independent Electoral Commission,” he wrote.
He expressed concern that the decision could establish a precedent for future administrations to appoint individuals with strong ties to their political parties to senior positions within the Electoral Commission.
According to him, such a development could intensify concerns about political influence over the institution responsible for overseeing elections and safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
President John Dramani Mahama recently swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission.
Their appointments filled vacancies created by the departure of Dr Bossman Eric Asare and former Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey.
