Trump calls Omar ‘totally crooked’ in first remarks on raid
President Trump called Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn) “totally crooked” in his first remarks since federal agents searched her home as part of ongoing criminal investigations.
“Well, I understand they’re looking at her very carefully,” he told reporters before departing the White House for Ohio. “I’ve always found her to be totally crooked personally, but that has nothing to do with me.”
“I think she’s a terrible person, but that’s really up to the DOJ,” he continued. “I have nothing to do with it.”
Agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) — the investigative arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — carried out the search of the Somali-born lawmaker’s Washington, D.C. home Monday.
“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” the Justice Department said in its statement.
A source familiar with the investigation told Reuters that it is related to alleged immigration fraud, and concerns part of her immigration papers that were filled out by her father when she was a child. She got her citizenship in 2000.
Omar on social media condemned the raid, calling it “political intimidation.”
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote on X. “For ten years, [President] Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
The raid comes roughly a month after White House border czar Tom Homan said there was a federal criminal investigation involving Omar.
“If someone committed an immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congressman or not, no one’s above the law. So, I’ll leave it at that. We’ll let HSI, Homeland Security Investigations, continue the investigation,” Homan said during an appearance on Fox News.
Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly targeted Omar, a vocal critic of the administration and part of the so-called “Squad” of progressive House members in Congress. The president has repeatedly bashed Somalia and Somali-Americans in Minnesota.
“The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants. There is Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State,” Trump wrote on Truth Social last week. “The people of Minnesota must fight back.”
After Trump called Omar “garbage” earlier this year, she said: “His obsession with me is creepy. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs.”
