First-ever Russian interior minister’s visit to Pakistan signals closer bilateral engagement

Pakistan and Russia are set to explore avenues for closer cooperation as Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev begins a four-day visit to Islamabad, the first by a Russian interior minister to Pakistan.

Kolokoltsev arrived in the federal capital on Monday following an invitation from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry received the visiting dignitary at the airport, according to Pakistan’s Interior Ministry.

The Russian minister is expected to hold a series of meetings with Pakistani officials during his stay. The discussions are likely to cover bilateral ties and opportunities to expand collaboration between Islamabad and Moscow.

The visit comes as both countries seek to broaden their partnership beyond diplomatic engagement, with trade, energy and regional affairs emerging as key areas of mutual interest.

Moscow has signalled its interest in maintaining closer ties with Islamabad. In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin characterised the relationship as “genuinely mutually beneficial,” reaffirming his country’s commitment to continued engagement with Pakistan.

Pakistan’s role in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has also been highlighted by Russia as an important platform for strengthening ties between the two countries.

Economic and energy cooperation have featured prominently in recent exchanges. In July, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk referred to Pakistan and Russia as “natural allies,” pointing to Islamabad’s significance in Moscow’s regional and economic outlook.

The latest visit takes place against a backdrop of expanding cooperation between the two countries, as they look to build stronger economic links amid changing regional and global dynamics.
