NDC Official Defends Appointment of New EC Deputy Chairpersons, Calls Them Competent

Rashid Tanko Computer, who serves as the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has come out in support of the recently sworn-in Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission, Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Kwaku Asamoah. He described both individuals as capable and well-qualified appointees who were selected by the President to serve the Commission.

His comments come amid public discussion and criticism regarding the appointments, with some questioning whether the process was fair and consistent. However, Tanko Computer rejected suggestions that the appointments represent double standards, insisting that the selections were made properly and in line with the President’s mandate.

According to him, the two Deputy Chairpersons possess the necessary competence and experience to carry out their duties at the Electoral Commission. He emphasised that the President exercised his constitutional authority in making the appointments and that there is nothing irregular about the process.

The swearing-in of Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Kwaku Asamoah has generated considerable attention in political circles, with various stakeholders expressing differing views on the matter. Critics have argued that the appointments raise questions about consistency in how such positions are filled. In response, the NDC official maintained that the focus should remain on the qualifications and ability of the appointees to deliver on their responsibilities.

Tanko Computer urged the public to judge the new Deputy Chairpersons by their performance and commitment to the work of the Electoral Commission rather than by political speculation. He expressed confidence that both individuals would contribute positively to the Commission’s operations, particularly as Ghana’s electoral body continues to prepare for future elections.

He further noted that the NDC remains committed to supporting institutions that uphold democratic principles and credible electoral processes. According to him, the appointments should be seen as part of efforts to strengthen the Electoral Commission rather than as a matter of political favouritism.

The newly sworn-in Deputy Chairpersons are expected to assume their roles and support the Commission’s leadership in carrying out its constitutional duties.
