Ghanaians React as Mahama Poses With New EC Deputy in New Photos

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as deputy chairpersons of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), formally ushering them into their new roles at the country’s electoral management body.

The ceremony was held at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, October 12, 2026, in the presence of EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and other officials.

Their appointments follow the departure of Dr Bossman Asare, who resigned as deputy chairperson responsible for Corporate Services effective July 31, 2026, to return to academia. Samuel Tettey, who oversaw Operations, also left office after reaching the compulsory retirement age of 65.

Asamoah is a lawyer and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). With more than 17 years of experience in public service, legal practice, academia and electoral administration, he previously served the EC as Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit.

Agbenyo, meanwhile, has experience in public administration, development planning and vocational education. She formerly served as Deputy Director of Operations at the Ghana TVET Service and as a commissioner of the National Development Planning Commission, where her work focused on inclusive growth, skills development and gender equality.

She also worked as a technical adviser for GIZ Ghana and co-authored the country’s first disability- and gender-inclusive technical and vocational education and training manual.

The appointments have renewed attention on the EC’s responsibility to maintain public confidence in Ghana’s electoral system. Under the 1992 Constitution, the Commission is mandated to organise and supervise elections and referendums.

Articles 43 and 44 establish the Commission’s composition and outline relevant qualification requirements and conditions of service for its leadership.

Although the appointments may prompt discussions about electoral independence and transparency, verified reactions from political parties and members of the public were not provided in the available report.

The two new deputy chairpersons are expected to uphold impartiality, professionalism and fairness while supporting the Commission in discharging its constitutional responsibilities.
