Fuel Discount Sparks Outrage As Nigerians Face ₦1,405 Petrol Price At NNPCL Stations
Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s petrol discount scheme after discovering that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) still sells petrol at ₦1,405 per litre, with the ₦66 discount available only to customers using its mobile application.
According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on October 12, 2026, the NNPCL spokesperson, Andy Odeh, explained that customers who access the discount through the company’s fuel app would pay ₦1,339 per litre; The initiative commenced on October 1 and is scheduled to end on October 31.
The arrangement has attracted criticism from motorists who complained that the application requirement could exclude people without smartphones, digital skills or reliable internet access.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), through its spokesperson, Benson Upah, described the discount as inadequate, arguing that it would provide little relief amid the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
Similarly, the Executive Director of the Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER), Frank Tietie, criticised the conditions attached to the offer, arguing that they undermine its purpose.
Public analyst Jide Ojo also questioned the scheme’s effectiveness, noting that the discount is restricted to NNPCL outlets and may remain unaffordable for many consumers; He urged the government to consider measures that would reduce petrol prices across more filling stations.
Meanwhile, a market survey showed that Bovas and MRS sold petrol at ₦1,390 per litre, while TotalEnergies and Hariz sold at ₦1,400 per litre.
The controversy has raised questions about the accessibility and effectiveness of the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount scheme.
