Mahama Says He Expects No Preferential Treatment from EC for His Government or Party
According to a report by GHOne TV on Monday, October 12, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he does not expect any preferential treatment from the Electoral Commission (EC) for his government or his party.
The President made the remarks while addressing newly appointed members of the Electoral Commission, as reported by the station and Starr FM. His message was a call for fairness and neutrality in the discharge of the Commission’s duties.
“As president, I don’t expect any preferential treatment from the Electoral Commission for my government or party,” President Mahama said.
The statement is a clear signal that the Presidency expects the EC to operate independently, without favour toward the ruling party or any other political group. It comes at a time when public confidence in electoral institutions remains central to the health of Ghana’s democracy.
The Electoral Commission is constitutionally mandated to organise and supervise public elections and referenda. Its credibility depends largely on the perception that it treats all political actors equally. By publicly disclaiming any expectation of special favours, the President appears to be reinforcing the principle that electoral bodies must remain impartial arbiters.
The Commission’s motto, as seen in its emblem, emphasises transparency, fairness and integrity, values that observers say are essential to maintaining trust in Ghana’s electoral process.
Political analysts often note that the conduct of an electoral body is shaped not only by its legal framework but also by the tone set by those who appoint its members. The President’s comments may therefore be read as an assurance to opposition parties and civil society that the new appointees will be free to perform their duties without interference.
The new EC appointees are expected to play a key role in preparing for future electoral activities, including voter registration, election administration and the resolution of disputes.
