Don Little Recounts Father’s Alleged Stealing, Abuse and Drunkenness During Childhood

Kumawood actor Don Little, born Stephen Atanga, has opened up about the difficult experiences he says he endured during childhood, recounting allegations of theft, physical abuse and financial neglect involving his father.

Speaking during an interview with media personality Nana Romeo, the actor described growing up in a household where, according to him, his father’s drinking and gambling habits contributed to the family’s struggles.

Don Little said his family lived in a wooden structure at Odorkor in Accra, where they were responsible for looking after a property under construction. He explained that the family was expected to protect building materials, including cement and iron rods, kept at the site.

According to the actor, he became suspicious of his father’s movements at night and began observing him. He alleged that he eventually discovered his father removing cement from the property and transporting it in a wheelbarrow to sell.

Don Little said he decided to report what he had witnessed to the foreman responsible for supervising the construction project. However, he claimed that his decision to disclose the alleged theft resulted in a confrontation with his father.

The actor alleged that his father physically assaulted him after learning that he had reported the incident. He described the experience as one of the troubling moments he remembers from his childhood.

Beyond the alleged incident involving the building materials, Don Little said his father’s spending habits made life difficult for the family. He claimed that whenever his father earned money from work, the money was often spent on alcohol or lottery gambling rather than used to provide for household needs.

According to the actor, his father rarely contributed money towards food and other basic necessities, leaving the family struggling financially.

Don Little further alleged that his mother also experienced physical abuse when she complained about his father’s habits. He said some of these incidents occurred in the presence of the children, exposing them to conflict and violence within the home.

His account has drawn attention to the challenges he says shaped his early life and the difficulties children can face when family relationships are affected by financial hardship, substance-related problems and domestic violence.

The actor’s revelations also highlight the potential emotional consequences of growing up in an unstable household, particularly when children witness violence involving their parents or feel unable to influence the circumstances around them.

Don Little has previously spoken publicly about aspects of his childhood and personal experiences. His latest account provides further insight into the hardships he says he encountered before becoming a recognised figure in Ghana’s Kumawood movie industry.

The allegations concerning his father are based on the actor’s account during the interview. The available reports do not provide an independent account of the incidents or indicate whether the claims were addressed by his father.
