Ayra Starr, Banky W, Dr Sid: Why Five Nigerian Artistes Moved Abroad
According to a report by The PUNCH on Monday, October 12, 2026, Nigerian entertainers Ayra Starr, Banky W, Dr Sid, Pepenazi and Lord of Ajasa are among the artistes who have relocated abroad for different reasons.
Ayra Starr, whose real name is Sarah Aderibigbe, announced in November 2025 that she had moved to New York City. The Mavin Records singer said living there had long been one of her ambitions. She also explained that the presence of a large Nigerian community made the city feel familiar.
Banky W, born Olubankole Wellington, moved to the United States with his family in 2024 to pursue further education. By 2026, he had also announced responsibilities as an associate pastor and global ambassador at Union Church, alongside work in education and other professional interests.
Dr Sid, whose real name is Sidney Esiri, relocated to Houston, Texas, in 2023 after securing remote employment with a company based in New York. Family connections also influenced his decision.
Pepenazi, born Opeyemi Kayode, made a different career shift in 2022 when he moved away from secular music towards gospel ministry. He subsequently became involved in preaching and ministry activities in the United Kingdom.
The latest name on the list is Lord of Ajasa, the veteran Yoruba-language rapper who recently celebrated becoming a United States citizen.
Although their circumstances differ, the five entertainers demonstrate that moving abroad does not follow one pattern. For some, it offers opportunities for education or employment; for others, it reflects family considerations, personal milestones or a change in vocation.
