Lionel Messi reveals major regret in his career
According to a report by Daily Post on Monday October 12, 2026, Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has revealed that not learning English when he was younger remains one of his biggest regrets.
The Inter Miami forward admitted that he had enough time to study the language during his childhood but failed to take advantage of the opportunity.
Messi, who spent more than two decades at Barcelona before moving to Paris Saint-Germain and later Inter Miami, explained that his inability to speak English sometimes made it difficult to communicate with influential personalities he met throughout his career.
“I regret many things. To not have learned English as a boy. I had the time to have at least studied English and I didn’t do it. I deeply regret it,” Messi said.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner added that he sometimes felt ignorant when he found himself unable to have conversations with people he admired because of the language barrier.
The 39-year-old admitted that he often looks back and wonders why he did not make better use of his time when he was younger.
Messi said the experience has influenced the advice he gives his children, stressing the importance of education and preparation.
He explained that he encourages them to take advantage of the opportunities available to them, noting that their circumstances are different from those he experienced growing up.
Despite his extraordinary achievements in football, Messi’s admission highlights a personal lesson he hopes his children will learn early in life.
