Vice President Say Government Cannot Pay Teachers Because They’re Too Many —PK

Ghanaian commentator P.K. Sarpong has raised concerns about delays in paying teachers’ arrears, questioning the reported explanation by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang that the large number of teachers makes it difficult for the government to clear the outstanding payments.

In a Facebook post, Sarpong challenged the situation, asking why teachers should invest their resources in promotion examinations and professional training when the financial rewards they earn are not delivered on time.

He argued that educators are expected to upgrade their qualifications, pass promotion examinations and accept greater responsibilities in exchange for improved remuneration. However, prolonged payment delays undermine the value of these professional achievements.

Sarpong questioned the purpose of pursuing promotions if teachers must wait indefinitely to receive the financial benefits attached to them.

He also used sarcasm to suggest that teachers might eventually need to learn how to work hard, secure promotions and endure lengthy delays before receiving their entitlements.

He further argued that if the growing number of teachers is contributing to the payment difficulties, the government should provide a clear explanation and take steps to address the problem.

According to Sarpong, encouraging teachers to improve their professional skills is not enough unless the government also fulfils the financial obligations arising from their promotions.

He emphasised that teachers should not be left with higher qualifications, official promotions and additional duties while waiting indefinitely for the remuneration they have earned.

He called for greater consistency between the government’s commitment to professional development and its responsibility to pay teachers their rightful benefits.
