FDA destroys 40ft container of unhygienic diapers imported from Spain

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has supervised the disposal of a 40-foot container of non-compliant diapers imported from Spain after the consignment was intercepted at the Tema Port.

The diapers, described by the FDA as loose, unpackaged and unhygienic, were destroyed at the Vigour Safe Disposal Site at Shai Hills to prevent them from entering the Ghanaian market.

The operation was conducted jointly by the FDA, the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division and National Security during an inspection at the Tema Port.

According to the FDA, the importer bore the cost of the disposal and was also subjected to applicable statutory fines.

The authority has urged importers to obtain all required approvals before importing regulated products into the country.

The disposal forms part of efforts by regulatory and security agencies to prevent non-compliant products from reaching consumers.
