South Africa’s inland petrol 95 price climbed above R30 per litre in October, while reported prices in Botswana show a different cost for motorists filling up their vehicles.

The comparison highlights how fuel prices across Southern Africa can affect household budgets and the cost of travelling between neighbouring countries.

According to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, petrol 95 increased by R3.33 per litre from 7 October 2026.

The price of inland 95 unleaded petrol rose to R30.25 per litre, while the coastal price increased to R29.38 per litre.

The department attributed the adjustments to higher international petroleum product prices, rising crude oil prices and other factors affecting the local fuel price.

At R30.25 per litre, motorists spending R5 000 on inland petrol 95 can purchase approximately 165 litres of fuel.

A 50-litre tank would cost R1 512.50 to fill at this price.

The increase comes amid pressure on international oil markets and higher shipping costs, according to the department’s October fuel price announcement.

In Botswana, octane-95 petrol was reported at P18.21 per litre on 5 October 2026, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.

Using an indicative exchange rate of R1.20 for one Botswana pula, R5 000 converts to approximately P4 167.

At P18.21 per litre, that amount would buy about 229 litres of petrol.

A 50-litre fill-up would cost P910.50, equivalent to approximately R1 093 at the assumed exchange rate.

These calculations are estimates and exclude any currency-conversion fees.

Using the stated prices and exchange rate, R5 000 would buy approximately 64 litres more petrol in Botswana than in South Africa’s inland market.

The comparison uses reported pump prices for October and an indicative exchange rate, so the actual difference may change with currency movements and subsequent fuel price adjustments.

Motorists should also remember that fuel prices can vary by location and petrol grade.

The figures provide a snapshot of the two markets rather than a guarantee of prices at every filling station.
