Ghana University Strike Take New Turn as Education Ministry Brings Leaders Together for Urgent Talks
Ghana’s Ministry of Education has invited leaders of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to an urgent meeting aimed at resolving the ongoing strike.
In a press statement dated Sunday, October 11, 2026, the ministry said the meeting would take place on Monday, October 12, bringing together the two organisations for discussions towards an amicable settlement.
The government hopes the engagement will help address the concerns raised by organised labour and pave the way for an early resolution of the industrial action affecting tertiary education institutions.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to addressing workers’ grievances through established negotiation mechanisms, emphasising that constructive engagement remains the preferred approach to resolving the dispute.
It also called on all parties to attend the meeting in good faith, urging their representatives to demonstrate responsibility and willingness to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
According to the statement, the ongoing strike has implications for students, university communities and the wider national interest, making an early settlement necessary to minimise further disruption.
The government specifically urged GAUA’s leadership to seize the opportunity to engage meaningfully with relevant stakeholders and work collaboratively towards ending the impasse.
The ministry expressed optimism that Monday’s discussions would produce a positive outcome, allowing normal academic and administrative activities to resume across affected tertiary institutions.
However, the statement did not provide details of the specific demands behind the strike or indicate whether any preliminary agreement had been reached before the scheduled meeting.
The outcome of the talks is expected to be crucial in determining whether the parties can resolve their differences through dialogue and restore normal operations within Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
The statement was signed by Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry of Education’s Press Secretary, who reiterated the government’s hope for a swift and peaceful resolution.
