Chidi Odinkalu Reacts As Umahi Says Coastal Road Project Will No Longer Go Through Lagos & Ogun

Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has reacted to reports that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project will no longer follow the coastal route beyond Lagos and Ogun states, but will instead pass through Edo State to connect with the East-West Road.

Odinkalu, in a post on social media, said the development vindicated his earlier position on the project, adding that he had faced criticism when he raised the issue about two and a half months ago.

“When I said this 2 & a half months ago, the usual dogs started barking. It was always evident from the beginning,” he wrote.

The reported change in the route was also shared by Lagos Traffic Report, which stated that the highway would take an inland detour through Edo State after Lagos and Ogun rather than continue along the coast.

According to the report, Minister of Works David Umahi described the decision as “a wonderful engineering decision by Mr President,” referring to President Bola Tinubu.

The reported development has drawn attention to the planning and route of the multibillion-naira coastal highway project, which was conceived to connect Lagos with other coastal communities across the southern part of Nigeria.

Odinkalu’s reaction suggests that he believes the reported route adjustment supports concerns he had previously raised about the project.

However, the specific details of his earlier comments and the official explanation for the reported change were not provided in the posts cited.
