APC Chairman: Nobody is protected in APC party, members of our party undergo prosecution everyday
According to Channels Television, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed strong confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the party’s internal polls show it is ahead across the country.
Yilwatda made the claim during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he maintained that the ruling party was not worried about the growing political contest ahead of the election.
“We have done fact-finding; we are leading. We have done our polls. We have our own polls that give us the real statistics across the states,” he said.
When asked whether the findings indicated that Tinubu would win the election, the APC chairman responded, “Of course!”
He also dismissed concerns about the opposition’s challenge, pointing to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), associated with Peter Obi.
Yilwatda went further to compare Tinubu with Atiku, declaring that the incumbent president was “far better” than the former vice president.
He defended Tinubu’s administration by highlighting its tax reforms, arguing that the new laws had expanded the tax base, increased government revenue and delivered benefits to low-income Nigerians.
On electricity, the APC chairman said the administration had empowered state governments to generate, transmit and distribute power, describing the development as an important step towards improving the sector.
Acknowledging the economic pressure facing Nigerians, particularly the rising cost of fuel, Yilwatda maintained that the current difficulties would not last forever.
“What we are passing through in Nigeria, for example, at this moment, is temporary. The increase in the cost of fuel is temporary. Nigerians believe in us,” he added.
The APC chairman also pushed back against allegations that the ruling party shields its members from prosecution over corruption and other offences.
“Nobody is protected in the APC party. I don’t want to mention names, but I know members of our party (APC) who are undergoing prosecution, who appear in court every day,” he said.
He stressed that enforcing accountability should not come at the expense of individuals’ fundamental human rights.
On disagreements arising from the party’s primaries, Yilwatda said the APC was adopting a three-pronged approach to resolve grievances. He added that the party leadership was reviewing its presidential campaign council list ahead of its inauguration.
He also welcomed support for Tinubu from political groups, including the coalition associated with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
Dismissing the “Tinubu-Must-Go” campaign, Yilwatda argued that its message did not reflect the views of Nigerians.
Despite his confidence, the APC chairman’s prediction remains a party claim, with the outcome of the 2027 presidential election still to be decided by voters.
